Come work in our food hut! (Applications close 2nd August 2017!)

We’re looking for a casual Barista / Food Outlet Operator to join our team!

Before you read any further: This role does not involve direct interaction with any animals. We cannot emphasise this enough. Please do not apply for this role if you want to work with our animals: this is a food preparation and customer service position. If you want to work with animals – why not consider our Internship?

  • Minimum 2 years experience in a cafe or similar food preparation environment
  • Familiar with food safety standards – a bonus if you have completed formal training in this area
  • Know how to make a great coffee
  • Love working in a fast paced environment
  • Passionate about plant-based food (or at least have an open mindedness to it – you do not have to be vegan to work with us!)
  • Available to work flexible hours with an increase in shifts in summer

  • Social enterprise with a focus on animal welfare and the environment
  • Rapidly growing business with awesome customers
  • Love providing amazing, educational experiences
  • Comfy uniforms
  • Great work environment (if we do say so ourselves)
  • Love surprising people with how delicious plant-based meals can be

The role

As a Food Outlet Operator, you’ll be working in the Bonorong Food Hut – our 100% plant-based, tiny cafe on site at Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary. Your view will be overlooking our Sanctuary – but you might not get to see it too often as there’ll be many customers to serve!

Most days you’ll be working independently, including but not limited to: warming prepared meals, setting up the cash float, updating and displaying appropriate signage, serving customers, managing conflicting priorities, and more.

You’ll be greeting customers, taking orders and payment, preparing meals and coffees, and serving food throughout the day. You’ll also be promoting the items and explaining the reasons why our food hut is 100% plant based – these can be interesting conversations!

Expect things to be fast paced and constantly evolving as we grow. We expect summer will be a challenge with our limited space, but one we are looking forward to tackling.

Shifts and availability

Our core business – the one that generates the income to support our animal welfare work – is tourism. This means that in winter you should only expect one shift a fortnight. We would love to promise you more, but we do need to be realistic.

Currently the shifts run from 10.15am – 3.30pm including breaks, and may be on any day of the week (Monday to Sunday), but will most likely be weekend shifts at this stage (Saturday or Sunday).

In Summer our Food Hut opening hours may be extended, and more shifts may become available. We would love someone that understands and can work with this demand – we know irregular shifts are not for everyone.

We are based in Brighton – around 30 minutes north of Hobart CBD. It is essential that you have your own reliable transport to get you to and from work.
